ATL Heat

It was awesome.

I had a great time Friday night at Fuggin Awesome 3 It was hot as hell in the Drunken Unicorn Friday, but nobody complained. Ladies were dancing, the fellas were smiling and the bass was bumping all night. ATL DJ Duo The Audubon Society set the table. Their set had tremendous range playing everything form K-os "Superstar" breakbeats to Spank Rock and B.o.B. The first act that stood out to me was ATL based MCsAnimal House. I know you're thinking that with a lineup featuring ATL underground stars like Muffy, Grip Plyaz, Killer Mike, etc that it's odd for me to mention a little known group.
The truth of it is that as soon as their beats dropped, booties dropped. Ladies emerged from their comforting perches along the dark shadows of the walls to bounce it like it's tender to Animal House's set. I can't lie, I was getting into it too. Were the lyrics mind-blowing? No. The beats were incredible, however and they rode those beats perfectly. The lyrics were about partying and bullshit but that message was right on time Friday night. It was obvious that they began to tire towards the end of their set because it didn't have the energy the rest of the show had but their point was made already: don't sleep on Animal House. When you talk about groups that have the potential to create a single that can catapault them out of the underground, this is one of them. I can hear that music being played on any top 40 Urban station.
Muffy's set was interesting in that they incorporated a little theatrics into it. I think it will continue to improve and has a chance to be impressive down the line. Her backup singers are beautiful and with Muffy's art direction you know they were styling on folks up on stage. Magnificent fashion. People expecting energy from her got it and as her stage show matures, she'll have a chance to give some great shows in the near future. The foundation for it is there. Hollyweerd performed with more energy than I've noticed from them in the past Friday Night. Of course what stood out most from them again was their fashion sense, their ease with each other on stage, Staggo Lee's Sax Solo on "Weerdo" KED's energy on his features and the fact that they have some really solid singles they perform. They are a young group- together for only 6 months. Their live show will only get better. Hollyweerd has the benefit of constantly performing, affording them the ability to gain experience.
Yelawolf was amazing. I've been impressed with his live show every time I've seen him. He had a live fiddler playing with him Friday in-keeping with Yelawolf's 'Bama sensibilities. Like Hollyweerd, he was wasn't shy to mix it up with the fans as he performed, but the mosh pits brought another level of energy I never am quite prepared for. He invited ladies up on stage to 'perform' with him. His rapport with these ladies only added to the show, the sound, the feel. Again, if you haven't heard Stereo please go to his myspace and download it. It's an amazing EP. Anytime you can incorporate Charlie Daniels, AC/DC and Pink Floyd into a hip hop show, you are doing some major things.

There isn't much else about the show that the pics won't tell you except that it got a little too awesome at times and waiting for the show to get back under control to hear the next act became a problem more than once. It was that crazy. For complete coverage including audio snippets and interviews, check my blog on VIMBY.com. It should be up next week, God willing. There I'll talk more in depth about each of the performances, the artists I talked to while I was there, and the scene in general. I'll also have a review of Hollyweerd's EP on artnouveau . Meanwhile you can check my review for Yelawolf's EP Stereo which is up on artnouveau right now.
Before going, I'd like to add that Killer Mike performed his new single and tore the house down. I finally had the pleasure of seeing SL Jones from Grind Time official live, and that was really fun. Young Trimm from ATL's Battery 5 family is a star. The man announced getting signed to Myspace.com's new lable with Interscope and I think he'll do well. He has some great songs that can go a long way. That's all for now, folks. I think I caught my wife's cold. I can't stop sneezing. Let me handle that before I go in to work tonight, peace

I know I promised a review of the Weekend tonight

I'm going to have to break my promise. Don't look at me like that. I'm sorry, y'all but I am TIRED. A-town day, El Bar on Thursday, A3C & Fuggin Awesome have WORN. ME. OUT. I don't have any energy at all. Didn't even have time to check out Janelle Monae and Tendaberry at Smith's Olde Bar. What I do have, however are pics. Tomorrow I'll edit the video I have, God Willing and post that as well. I have video of Yelawolf's performance at Fuggin Awesome, I have video from ATL day featuring East-Atlanta Rock Band The Stereophones and Atlanta Hip Hop Band HEED performing live with assistance from the Tower High School Marching Band @ A-town day as well as video from A3C from the Juice Crew's MC Shan, Roxanne Shante and Biz Markie. Should be fun stuff. Tonight I was supposed to swing by Apache Cafe to peak my head in the door for a second to check out Van Hunt's show as well as see Contraverse at the Relaspe Theatre, but again...I'm tired. I have projects due in the morning, and I did very little work on them this weekend. In other words I'm in big trouble. It was worth it, though And I'd do it all again.

Here is the Flickr set of pics from AC3 2008. If you want, you can peruse the pics of ATL day too listed under my account there as well.

Thanks to DJ Hotsauce of SouthernStyle Dj's for this footage. People talk about crunk like the old heads in that scene, etc don't respect the culture. They are fools. I watched DJ Jelly recite EVERY verse from the Juice Crew.

Peace until tomorrow, family.

...So I'm on my New York shit.

I'll leave a post on Peter Hadar off until next time. We got weeks to chat about shit. I want ask right quick about Kudu, tho.

Appearantly folk in Atlanta are up on them. Skape, a producer from the Battery Five crew was telling me on a local messageboard that he loves them. I'm glad to see that they are getting love in the A. It always perplexes me, however how J*Davey, Sa-Ra, and Heavy got alot of this new fangled electro/soul/rock love, but Kudu is left out hanging on the back porch. What kinda sense does that make?

I been trying to figure that shit out for the better part of a year. I love some Kudu. I love them so much that I aint even going to post a link. Not this week, anyway. Also, aren't they nublu label mates with Wax Poetic (not the magazine)? What the hell happened to Wax poetic? It's like they just disappeared!

Any way, back to J records recording artist Emily King.

I like her. I like her alot, actually. I know her story is prolly constructed 'n shit, but I don't care. I buy the story of her life, I buy the package. And when the album drops I'ma buy that too. She has some dope, dope music. I've put her on my Grits n Gravy 'Mixes' (Don't hate on me, I aint no Dj) of the past...But check her our for yourself:

I see people out there hating ALREADY, but fuck 'em. Take a "walk in her shoes" before you can even think of judging her.

I was fittna get me a jawn from the good folks over @ epidemikcoalition.com today. Just for sumin new, fresh. Then I realized they aint got shit that fit a nigga. DAMN I gotta lose weight. Then I also noticed I didn't do laundry. I don't have shit to wear. How sad.

So instead of going out, I'm on this blog talking about an NYC artist when I could be out in MY city at the park. Damn that's pathetisad. I wanted to go see Herbie Hancock today at the Atlanta Jazz fest. I mentioned the jazz fest a few weeks ago on this blog. I gotta be in at work at fucking midnight anyway. So I'm about to hit the bed and take a nap.

before I do, tho...

Peep this electronica band called One hand loves the other from right here in the A.

"Rubbernecker nightingale"

Also, I prolly shouldn't mention Skape without mentioning his boy- recently signed recording Artist, skater, Dixie Mafia member (you know, Poncho Grady and 'em) and partime Atlantan repping Gadsen, Alabama...Yelawolf.

Btw, that tall brother u see in the video that was in that proton backstage video from a few weeks back on this blog? That's Gripplayz. I'm sure you've heard of his project with Tripp from the Rising Sons, or have heard him perform with Collective Efforts.

Later we'll talk about him and other ATL artist next week.
